ABUI Publishes its First Book
Note: Banyan and the VINES operating
system are no longer manufactured. Still, Rob’s book contains many tidbits
still valuable today for Linux and other Unix systems. The book is no longer
available for sale, but here is the old info for your reading pleasure.
The ABUI announces the publication of its first book, Banyan's ENS and SCO UNIX by Rob Sparre. Compelled by the push towards open standards, the computer industry is breaking away from proprietary systems. With the publication of Sparre's book, ABUI takes the initiative in supporting this important trend. Sparre's book will be introduced at the Fall '94 ABUI Conference. The price is $39.95 for ABUI members, $45.95 for non-ABUI members, and discount coupons for an additional 20% off will be available at the conference.
"Introducing Sparre's book is in true keeping with the spirit of ABUI," proclaims Ted Kull, ABUI's Past President. "ABUI publishes the premier technical magazine for the Banyan community, Enterprise Networking, and now we're pleased to publish this pracitical `how-to' guide. It's exactly the kind of effort that ABUI was founded to promote. Users helping users. That's the core of our mission."
With Banyan's ENS and SCO UNIX, Sparre renders his wealth of knowledge about SCO UNIX and networking in a no-nonsense guide that picks up where most documentation leaves off. "Banyan's VINES hides the complexities of UNIX," explains Sparre. "But the push towards open systems -- towards client/server computing -- means that users need to learn more. To take advantage of the latest UNIX technologies, networks need to support more than one flavor of UNIX, and users need to learn how to run them. Bringing SCO UNIX into the fold is a very good way to learn basic UNIX skills and expand upon VINES. And with the help of this new book, you don't have to become a UNIX guru". Beginning with an easy-to-read description of SCO UNIX and VINES, Sparre's book quickly moves into a discussion of Banyan's Enterprise Network Services (ENS). With ENS, Banyan de-couples the best features of VINES and applies them to SCO UNIX, AIX, and HP-UX.
The following is a partial list of the many topics Rob covers in the main chapters of his book:
Readers will also find several appendices that further document hard-won experience. All together, Banyan's ENS and SCO UNIX provides a wealth of information that will increase the value of UNIX computer purchases by helping users get the most from them.
Rob Sparre has managed VINES networks since 1987. Rob is currently President of Dorset Professional Services, Inc. While writing the book, he was a Consulting Engineer with Entex, located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia. He was with FCP Technologies until it was purchased by Entex in July 1996. He was a Project Network Operations Analyst until 1995 for Delmarva Power, located in Newark, Delaware, where he managed a 50-server, 22-site VINES network. Sparre has been an active member of ABUI since 1988, and he chaired the first UNIX-TCP/IP interest group in 1992. In 1993, Sparre was named Project Manager for the ABUI conference network, and he assembled the first all-volunteer group that's now known as the ABUI*Net Team. Sparre is currently the ABUI*Net Applictions Manager as well as a senior technical writer for ABUI's Enterprise Networking Magazine. He was a SYSOP for Banyan's BANFORUM on Compuserve for many years, where he helped new and veteran users learn more about VINES. Rob was the original manager of the ABUI Web Team.
